Bill introduced to expedite approvals of new feed products

Kody Blois, MP (Kings-Hants, NS) and chair of the House of Commons agriculture and agri-food committee recently introduced Private Member’s Bill C-359, that seeks to amend the federal Feeds Act, Seeds Act and Pest Control Products Act. The bill proposes a 90-day provisional registration for new products, if the products have already been approved by two or more trusted jurisdictions.

Labelling clarification and new flexibilities

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently issued a notice advising of new information that has been added to chapter 4 section 4.0 General guidance on labelling of the RG-1 Feed Registration Procedures and Labelling Standards on the Livestock feeds webpage. Changes include clarification on the acceptable use of acronyms in brand names and a new flexibility on how vitamins D and E are listed on labels of domestically manufactured mixed feeds.

Important notice for feed mills with prescription drug premixes on-site

The Health Product Compliance Directorate (HPCD), in collaboration with the Veterinary Drugs Directorate (VDD), will soon initiate a Compliance Monitoring Project (CMP) to assess selected commercial feed mills (CFMs) that are currently handling prescription drug premixes (including medically important antimicrobials).

Consultation on guidance for when a plant requires a feed assessment

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has launched a consultation on their new guidance document How to determine when a plant-derived ingredient requires a feed pre-market assessment, a supplement to the existing Guidelines for the assessment of novel feeds: Plant sources. This guidance is intended to support innovation and the introduction of products developed from new technologies, while keeping consistent with current and future Feeds Regulations.

Attend CFIA’s upcoming ERA-Feed Mill Webinar

The implementation of the Establishment-based Risk Assessment model for feed mills (ERA-Feed Mill model) by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has begun. As facilities experience the assessment process for the first time, questions have been raised. To respond to this feedback, the CFIA ERA team is inviting the feed industry to an interactive Q&A session on October 19, 2023.
