The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently released new guidance on How to determine when a plant-derived ingredient requires a feed pre-market assessment. This guidance supplements the existing Guidelines for the assessment of novel feeds: Plant sources and incorporates feedback received during a consultation held on the document last fall.

Rendering plants holding a permit under the authority of the Health of Animals Regulations have until June 14, 2024 to submit their online questionnaire for the Establishment-based Risk Assessment model for renderers (ERA-Renderer model). All permitted rendering plants should have received an email from the CFIA with information on how to complete and submit the questionnaire. The Ontario Agri Business Association (OABA) has been working on providing guidance to meet the reporting requirements outlined in Bill S-211, An Act to enact the Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act and to amend the Customs Tariff, and is graciously sharing these resources with ANAC members.

Following on from the consultation this past winter regarding the proposed development of a plastics registry, the federal government has recently published its Notice with respect to reporting of plastic resins and certain plastic products for the Federal Plastics Registry for 2024, 2025 and 2026 in Canada Gazette, Part I (CGI).

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) adjusts its service fees annually based on the Consumer Price Index in accordance with the Service Fees Act. This requirement ensures that the CFIA’s service fees keep pace with inflation.

Employers of federally regulated industries (including feed mills) should have adjusted payrolls on April 1, 2024 to reflect the new federal minimum wage of $17.30 per hour.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has published a new guidance document in chapter 1 of Regulatory Guidance 1 (RG-1): 1.7 Priority status and review of feed applications. This guidance provides the criteria and the process by which feed applications may be prioritized for evaluation ahead of applications already in the queue.
