The Government is proposing the development of a plastics registry as part of Canada’s plan to reduce plastic pollution and move toward the goal of zero plastic waste by 2030. Data on all major categories of plastic products will need to be reported, including those used within agriculture.

Health Canada (HC) has begun contacting companies selling vitamin D fortified eggs (containing ≥1.25 micrograms of vitamin D per egg) regarding the need to apply for a Temporary Marketing Authorization (TMA) to enable continued sales of their vitamin D fortified eggs.
A 30-day consultation period is now open for the proposed new single ingredient feed (SIF) description for 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP). Please submit any comments on this SIF definition directly to the Animal Feed Program (cfia.afp-paa.acia@inspection.gc.ca) by December 16, 2023.

The feed industry is eagerly anticipating the publication of the modernized Feeds Regulations and the benefits they will bring. Unfortunately, the process to have the regulations approved through the different levels of government has halted due to a recently identified issue with new requirements related to the export of feed and feed ingredients.

The 2024 notices have been delayed until late December or January. The deadline for submitting renewal applications for registrations that expire on March 31, 2024 will be March 31 as in previous years. Once the modernized Feeds Regulations are published, it will be up to each business to determine which of their products will continue to require registration and therefore renewal. To help you make these decisions, ANAC hopes to provide a Product Registration Webinar ahead of the renewal deadline.

Since the proposed Tables of Maximum Nutrient Values for Feeds were published for consultation, ANAC has been working with the CFIA to resolve nutrient maximums that were too low and would not support current industry practices. Most of these nutrient maximum levels were resolved quickly, however four remained outstanding as discussions continued between industry, CFIA and Health Canada. Those final four nutrient maximums have now been resolved.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), in collaboration with the Canadian Pork Council, have recently announced an important milestone to protect the trade of live pigs, pork and pork products in the event of an African swine fever (ASF) outbreak in Canada. The National Standards and a National Framework for ASF Compartments are now available to guide industry in the next steps towards implementing the Canadian ASF Compartment Program.
