On April 16, the government published the Order in Council (OIC) entitled United States Surtax Remission Order (2025). This order, effective immediately, provides remission of tariffs on goods imported for use in Canada in the manufacture or processing of any good.

On April 15, the Minister of Finance “announced that the government intends to provide temporary 6-month relief for goods imported from the U.S. that are used in Canadian manufacturing, processing and food and beverage packaging, and for those used to support public health, health care, public safety, and national security objectives.

Today, President Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs for most nations. After conflicting information was received from the White House, it has now been clarified that the U.S. tariffs applied to Canadian goods remain status quo.

On April 2, President Trump signed an executive order to implement a new regime of tariffs to be applied to goods imported into the U.S. Fortunately, Canada avoided the heavy levies applied against other countries. The tariff landscape for Canadian exports remains the same except for an additional 25% tariff to be applied to Canadian-made passenger vehicles which came into effect at 12:01 on April 3.

Since the Canadian government published the $125 billion proposed tariff list for consultation, ANAC has collected feedback from members on which list items may negatively impact feed businesses if tariffs are applied on U.S. products coming into Canada. ANAC has organized approximately 80 identified items into categories and created a summary document entitled Tariff codes impacting the feed industry.
