A search for information on mycotoxins in feed generally results in few details specific to ergot in feed. In areas where ergot is a rare or novel concern, this can present a challenge for mills suddenly faced with the presence of ergot in their incoming ingredients.

ANAC commissioned Sean Thompson of the University of Saskatchewan’s Feeds Innovation Institute to write a white paper on “Reducing the impact of ergot in livestock feed”. A group of experts from ANAC’s Nutrition Committee provided input on commercial practices related to ergot. The full document provides a review of ergot contamination in animal feed including background information, proper sampling procedures as well as risk mitigation strategies. A one-page summary of the report has also been created.
