Dans ce contexte, de nombreuses entreprises agroalimentaires se sont volontairement fix\u00e9 des objectifs ambitieux qui vont dans le m\u00eame sens. La carboneutralit\u00e9 est un stade auquel les \u00e9missions anthropiques de GES sont compens\u00e9es par une \u00e9limination \u00e9quivalente. \u00c9tant donn\u00e9 que plus de 70 % des GES associ\u00e9s \u00e0 la production de b\u0153uf et de lait sont \u00e9mis \u00e0 la ferme, les \u00e9leveurs devront redoubler d\u2019ardeur pour adopter des pratiques de r\u00e9duction des \u00e9missions de GES afin de continuer \u00e0 vendre leurs produits. Au Canada, les empreintes carbones du b\u0153uf et du lait \u00e0 la ferme sont inf\u00e9rieures \u00e0 50 % de la moyenne mondiale et continuent de diminuer gr\u00e2ce aux progr\u00e8s r\u00e9alis\u00e9s en mati\u00e8re de nutrition, de g\u00e9n\u00e9tique, de sant\u00e9, de gestion du fumier, de production d&rsquo;aliments et de gestion agricole. Cependant, l\u2019am\u00e9lioration de l&rsquo;efficacit\u00e9 de la production pour diminuer les empreintes carbones ne permettront pas d&rsquo;atteindre les objectifs de r\u00e9duction des \u00e9missions absolues de GES requises. Le pr\u00e9sent document traite des possibilit\u00e9s de r\u00e9duire les \u00e9missions de GES des exploitations bovines et laiti\u00e8res canadiennes et, tout particuli\u00e8rement, des innovations n\u00e9cessaires pour diminuer consid\u00e9rablement les \u00e9missions de m\u00e9thane ent\u00e9rique. Bien qu&rsquo;il ne sera pas possible d&rsquo;obtenir des produits issus de ruminants \u00e0 z\u00e9ro \u00e9missions nettes dans un avenir proche, il pourrait \u00eatre plus r\u00e9aliste de viser la production de b\u0153uf et de produits laitiers sans impact climatique. Cet objectif pourrait \u00eatre atteint en adoptant de mani\u00e8re rigoureuse les pratiques exemplaires pour r\u00e9duire les \u00e9missions \u00e0 la ferme, en comptabilisant le carbone du sol s\u00e9questr\u00e9 dans les prairies et en appliquant la nouvelle m\u00e9thode de calcul du potentiel de r\u00e9chauffement global (PRG*) pour reconna\u00eetre que le m\u00e9thane provenant des ruminants a une courte dur\u00e9e de vie dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re et fait partie d&rsquo;un cycle biologique, contrairement au CO2 issu des combustibles fossiles, et qu\u2019il ne contribue donc pas au r\u00e9chauffement des temp\u00e9ratures lorsque le nombre d&rsquo;animaux demeure constant, comme c&rsquo;est le cas au Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:20% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"358\" height=\"239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anacan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Beauchemin-Karen-Photo.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9897 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anacan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Beauchemin-Karen-Photo.png 358w, https:\/\/www.anacan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Beauchemin-Karen-Photo-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Biographie en anglais : Dr. Karen Beauchemin is a federal scientist in Canada who is recognized as an international authority on greenhouse gas emissions from livestock farming. Dr. Beauchemin and her colleagues have established a broad-based research program to improve feed utilization of beef and dairy cattle while reducing methane production. The research is helping Canadian farmers improve the sustainability of meat and milk production, while adapting to climate change impacts. She is currently a senior research scientist at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada\u2019s Lethbridge Research and Development Centre, with more than 30 years of experience. She has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards including the Canadian Beef Industry Award for Outstanding Research and Innovation (2020) and Agriculture Canada\u2019s Golden Harvest Award (2021). Karen served on the National Academy of Science\u2019s Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle committee and has published more than 500 refereed scientific publications over her
