Ergot Primer for Feed Industry
A search for information on mycotoxins in feed generally results in little that is summarized and specific to ergot in feed. In areas where ergot is a rare or fairly recent concern, this can present a challenge for mills suddenly faced with the presence of ergot in their incoming ingredients.
As reported in the March newsletter, ANAC commissioned Sean Thompson of the University of Saskatchewan’s Feeds Innovation Institute to write a white paper on “Reducing the impact of ergot in livestock feed”. A group of experts from ANAC’s Nutrition Committee provided input on commercial practices related to ergot. The full document provides a review of ergot contamination in animal feed including background information, proper sampling procedures as well as risk mitigation strategies. A one-page summary of the report has also been created.
