Medicated Feed
CFIA, ANAC and a number of producer groups have agreed to establish a joint process for discussing controls around the use of feed born medications by setting up a Steering Committee.
The Steering Committee held its inaugural meeting on March 21, 2007 in Ottawa to lay out a process for industry and government to resolve discussions around medicated feed controls in order to fill the regulatory void. The Steering Committee has identified a series of projects that recognize CFIA’s mandate to develop a regulatory framework for feed born medications, establish linkages between regulatory requirements and industry food safety programs, identify a system for profiling risks associated with drug carry-over, and scope out an implementation and enforcement program for industry.
In February 2007 ANAC, the Canadian Animal Health Institute and the Canadian Pork Council presented a paper to CFIA outlining the need for a collaborative approach to developing controls around the manufacturing of medicated feed. The CFIA has not recognized this effort and has not called the Steering Committee together since 2008 . The Commercial feed industry continues to ensure safe production and handling of medicated feed through its HACCP based voluntary program, FeedAssure.
ANAC pushes for feed regulatory reform -
| To succeed in the international feed market, Canada needs a contemporary regulatory regime attuned to the high standards set in the European Union and the United States. Without a critical appraisal and modernization, Canada's current feed regulations may cause the domestic industry to stagnate." Lippert. |
