Is Your Supplier SRM Free?
Since July 12, 2007, it is illegal to feed Specified Risk Material (SRM) to any animal. Feed manufacturers have been encouraged to stop using SRM before this date (e.g. May 1, 2007), to provide a reasonable period of time to clear SRM from the feed system.
Ensuring feed inputs are SRM-free
As a manufacturer it is your responibility to ensure your ingredients meet any product specification or regulatory requirements. If you use ruminant meat-and-bone meal its your obligation to ensure it is SRM-free.
There is currently no scientific or visual test that will rule-out the presence of SRM in meat-and-bone meal (prohibited material) or in any other ingredients. It is therefore important that you work with your supplier to ensure they have the necessary process controls to provide you with an SRM-free product. In addition, you should ask your supplier to provide written confirmation that each shipment of ruminant meat-and-bone meal is SRM-free.
Working with your suppliers
As a feed manufacturer you should communicate with your suppliers about your requirements for SRM-free inputs.
It is important to recognize that some suppliers have had to implement extensive changes in their operations to ensure SRM-free ingredients. These changes included dedicated equipment, processing lines and conveyances; special permits; and restrictions on SRM disposal.
As a feed manufacturer you may need to make an operational decision about how to proceed if SRM-free inputs are not available when you need them. You may choose an alternative product or continue to use existing supplies until SRM-free ingredients are available.
