Labeling
Since 1997, ruminant meat-and-bone meal (prohibited material) and feed containing it have been required to carry a warning statement on the label. This statement reads: "Do not feed to cattle, sheep, deer or other ruminants."
Warning statement on labels mandatory since July 12, 2007
Under the Enhanced Animal Health Protection From BSE it is mandatory to use a new, stronger warning statement on all labels for ruminant meat-and-bone meal as an ingredient, and on all livestock feed, including fish feed, that contains ruminant meat-and-bone meal. This new warning statement must read:
"Feeding this product to cattle, sheep, deer or other ruminants is illegal and is subject to fines or other punishment under the Health of Animals Act./Il est interdit d'en nourrir les bœufs, moutons, cerfs et autres ruminants et des amendes ou autres peines sont prévues à cet égard par la Loi sur la santé des animaux."
The warning statement must appear on the product label and may appear in either English or French or in both official languages.
Labels will typically be attached to bags, or attached to the invoice for bulk shipments. However, an invoice for bulk shipments can be a label if all the information as required by regulations is on the invoice.
